L’articolo indeterminativo is used to indicate a single or unspecified object/noun. Its equivalent in English is “a/an”.
 
For example:

“Chiamo un medico” (un medico, a doctor, in general who we don’t know)
 

The indefinite article is used only for singular nouns
masculine: un, uno
feminine: una, un’

 
Un : used for all masculine nouns followed by a consonant (un gatto). It NEVER has an apostrophe before masculine nouns starting with a vowel. (un amico)
 
Uno : used for masculine nouns followed by

  • impure s, an s followed by consonant, (uno studente)
  • x (uno xilofono)
  • z (uno zio)
  • ps (uno psicologo)
  • pn (uno pneumatico)
  • gn (uno gnomo)
  • sc (uno scoiattolo)

Una used for feminine nouns that begin with a consonant (una casa)
 
Un’ used for feminine nouns that begin with a vowel (un’amica)
