On February 2, 2022, Monica Vitti, one of the greatest actresses in the entire world cinema, not only in Italy, passed away at the age of 90.

Un cambiamento epocale è arrivato con Monica Vitti nei film di tutto il mondo. Rappresentava il cambiamento di un’intera forma d’arte con un viso bello, ma irrequieto e spigoloso, in cui non c’era traccia di celebrità standard o di profonda popolanità.
Invece era una donna nervosa e fragile, con una voce roca e commovente, e un modo introietto di comunicare le sue emozioni.

Da bambina, Monica Vitti, metteva in scena spettacoli casalinghi per distrarre i suoi fratelli dagli orrori delle bombe negli ultimi anni di guerra.

Monica Vitti, pseudonimo di Maria Luisa Ceciarelli, naque a Roma nel 1931. Da adolescente apparve in produzioni teatrali amatoriali, raffinando poi il suo talento all’Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica di Roma. Il suo primo ruolo cinematografico è stato in “Ridere Ridere Ridere” di Scola nel 1954. L’ultimo è stato “Scandalo Segreto” nel 1989, che ha scritto, diretto e interpretato.

Il nome d’arte fu una scelta artistica su consiglio del suo insegnante in Accademia Sergio Tofano: Monica seguita da metà del cognome di sua madre, Vittiglia.

She instead she was a nervous and fragile woman, with a hoarse and moving voice, and an introject way of communicating her emotions.

As a child, Monica Vitti staged home shows to distract her brothers from the horrors of bombs in the last years of the war.
Monica Vitti, pseudonym of Maria Luisa Ceciarelli, was born in Rome in 1931. As a teenager she appeared in amateur theatrical productions, then refining her talent at the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome. Her first film role was in Scola’s “Ridere Ridere Ridere” (“Laughing Laughing Laughing”) in 1954. Her last was “Secret Scandal” in 1989, which she wrote, directed and starred in.

Her name was an artistic choice on the advice of her teacher at the Academy, Sergio Tofano: Monica followed by half of her mother’s surname, Vittiglia.

“L’avventura”

Una donna scompare durante una gita in barca nel Mediterraneo. Durante la ricerca, il suo amante e la sua migliore amica sono attratti l’uno dall’altro.
Questo film è il primo capitolo della cosiddetta “trilogia esistenziale” o “trilogia dell’incomunicabilità”, seguita da “La notte” e conclusa con “L’eclisse”. Il film segna l’inizio del sodalizio sentimental-artistico tra Antonioni e Monica Vitti.
Alla premiere del 1959 al Festival di Cannes, Michelangelo e Monica fuggirono dal teatro, a causa della violenta reazione del pubblico al loro film, che tuttavia ha vinto il Premio della Giuria
Il film è uscito contemporaneamente a “La Dolce Vita” di Federico Fellini. Entrambi furono presentati al Festival di Cannes del 1960. Il film di Fellini ha vinto la Palma d’Oro mentre, “L’Avventura” ha vinto il Premio della Giuria.

A woman goes missing on a boat trip in the Mediterranean. While searching, her lover and her best friend are attracted to each other.
This film is the first chapter of the so-called “existential trilogy” or “incommunicability trilogy”, followed by “The night” and concluded with “The eclipse”. The film marks the beginning of the sentimental-artistic partnership between Antonioni and Monica Vitti.
At the 1959 premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Michelangelo and Monica fled the theater, due to the violent reaction of the public to their film, which nevertheless won the Jury Prize
The film was released at the same time as Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita”. Both were presented at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival. Fellini’s film won the Palme d’Or while, “L’Avventura” won the Jury Prize.

Una commedia italiana che affronta i temi del rapimento della sposa e del delitto d’onore, ancora attuali nella cultura meridionale dell’Italia dell’epoca e in una certa misura normalizzati dalla legge italiana. Solo di recente erano stati contestati quando Franca Viola si rifiutò pubblicamente di sposare l’uomo che l’ha violentata.
Monica Vitti ha vinto il David di Donatello come migliore attrice.
Il film è stato nominato per l’Oscar al miglior film in lingua straniera.

Un grande classico del cinema italiano. Questa commedia all’italiana è tratta dal romanzo “Ricordi di un ladro” scritto da Dacia Maraini nel 1972. È una storia vera ambientata durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
Teresa Numa, figlia orfana di un contadino senza cuore del Lazio, rimane incinta e vedova di guerra. Sarà costretta a reinventarsi come ladra e truffatrice per cercare di cavarsela. La sua entrata in delitto aprirà le porte del carcere e successivamente anche quelle del manicomio, senza poter riconciliarsi con il figlio.

A great classic of Italian cinema. This Italian comedy is based on the novel “Memories of a Thief” written by Dacia Maraini in 1972. It is a true story set during the Second World War.
Teresa Numa, orphaned daughter of a heartless peasant from Lazio, becomes pregnant and a war widow. She will be forced to reinvent herself as a thief and scammer to try and get away with it. Her entering into crime will open the doors of the prison and subsequently also those of the asylum, without being able to reconcile with her son.

“Amore mio aiutami”

Una commedia all’italiana che vede i due protagonisti, Giovanni e Raffaella, felicemente sposati da dieci anni, ma il loro rapporto va in crisi quando Raffaella si innamora di Valerio Mantovani, un bel quarantenne che ha conosciuto durante i concerti di musica da camera che frequenta settimanalmente con sua madre.
Il film è stato il numero uno a Roma nel suo primo fine settimana di apertura.

The film was the number one film in Rome in its first opening weekend.

È un film di genere avventura in cui il Duca Pandolfo prima di partire dal suo castello per le crociate pone una cintura di castità alla moglie, Boccadoro. Inoltre nomina nobile il cavaliere Guerrando, del quale Boccadoro si è innamorata. Appena parte il marito, Boccadoro rientra subito in possesso della chiave della cintura di castità.

It’s an adventure film in which Duke Pandolfo, before leaving his castle for the crusades, places a chastity belt on his wife, Boccadoro. He also appoints the knight Guerrando as nobleman, with whom Boccadoro falls in love. As soon as her husband leaves, she immediately regains possession of the key to the chastity belt.
